The extract for snail cream is called Helix Aspersa Müller Glycoconjugates. Without being any more technical now, it is a mucus or fluid that snails release. This mucus is excreted by the snails to help them move and protect them from dangerous bacteria. The snail slime contains substances that have proven to enhance our skin’s beauty.

Early time discoveries

It all started accidentally...

In the 1960s, a Spanish oncologist named Rafael Abad accidentally discovered the healing properties of snail serum. While subjecting snails to radiation therapy used to treat cancer, he discovered that snails released mucus when stimulated. He noticed that by excreting this fluid, they were able to heal very quickly following the harmful radiations. He then tested the effects of this substance on human skin and found positive results.

In Chile in 1995 some farmers, while exporting snails to Europe, noticed that small cuts and scrapes on their hands were quickly healed when they were handling snails. Since then, plenty of research has been done on snail slime to discover its benefits to human skin.

How does it work?

The extract is renowned for its regenerative properties and restoration of damaged skin cells or tissues. This can be obtained by hand in specialised farms. A common way to get the snail to excrete slime is to stimulate it with a wooden stick. Litres of the fluid is extracted and sent to laboratories in Europe, where it is analysed and purified. Some of the substances included in the extract are allantoin, elastin, glycolic acid and hyaluronic acid. All of these and other such substances have typically been used before in cosmetic products. It seems that we have finally found a natural solution to all our skin woes and troubles.

What does science say?

Although there is some difficulty in carrying out clinical trials and truly controlled experiments to test the effectiveness of the snail slime cream, some studies have proven it very beneficial to the skin. So far, the results have been encouraging. In spite of scepticism, the snail cream is set to capture the skin care cosmetics market.

As strange as it may sound, the snail slime is a natural biochemical product that has been helping people treat all kinds of skin issues. From anti-aging to skin care solutions, snail slime cosmetic has proven to be quite promising. With the mix of ingredients that they contain, snail cosmetic is set to be the next new thing in the skin care industry.
